Safe Harbor - Luanne Rice

OVERVIEW and SUMMARY of Safe Harbor by Luanne Rice

Category: Books

Genre: Family

Author: Luanne Rice

Tagline: “No matter where life takes you, you’ll always come home…”

About two sisters Dana and Lily Underhill who loved to do everything together, both are gifted with painting. Dana a free-spirited woman who is so into adventures. Lily on the other hand loves home and gardening and of course painting flowers and vines as well.

When they were young, they taught SAILING at Newport and befriended an 8-yr.-old boy and taught him for free to sail.

Years after….

Dana resides in France and has been around the world while Lily keeps asking her to settle down near where she lives. Then, on a calm, moonlit night an accident occured and Dana was called home to Hubbard’s Point to become the mother of her two young nieces, Quinn and Allie.

As the three of them struggle to begin a new life - while finding the truth about what really happened to Lily and his husband Mark, help comes in the person of an old childhood friend. The 8-year old boy Dana and Lily taught to sail (and saved his life) has now grown tall, a striking Marine bioligist, who has been in love with Dana for years.

A story of motherhood, sisterhood and love. :) Heartwarming.

I like the way Luanne writes, the way she weaves her characters. All her stories (so far, Ive read two of her novels)have simple settings. Nothing flashy, just heartwarming. :) The prescence and constant mention of dolphins and mermaids to most of her books…… making me love it even more. I’ve noticed she mentions characters from other books, somehow the people in her different books are connected to each other. :)

The Core 2003

Category: MOVIE

Genre: Science Fiction

Directed by\: Jon Amiel

Tagline: The only way out is in.

First scenes: A number of people died within a ten-block radius….

Strange things are happening: Birds loosing the navigational ability…. and people dying on the first part, intrigued them.

Which lead them to assume that it has something to do with the electromagnetic impulse.

A team of six (6) “terranauts” was formed to drill down to the Earth’s core and attempt to restart the rotation of the core.

Obviously, in movies like this only two gets back up alive, killing the rest on the expedition. And just like in any other movie…. the black person dies as well.. which was again so obvious - and pretty sad at the same time.

Stone 588 - Gerald A. Browne

OVERVIEW and SUMMARY of Stone 588 by Gerald A. Browne

Category: Books Genre: Suspense Author: Gerald A. Browne

The story is about a flawed gemstone that was given to Philip Springer's father who was a diamond dealer, founder of Springer & Springer from the System. The System - the one that controls the flow of diamond. This stone is too flawed to be of interest from diamond dealers and was not considered as a diamond.

To Springer's family this stone has always been a "reminder stone", his father's reminder stone and that was that. Until, they discovered it can heal. Suddenly, everyone wanted to have the Stone for themselves as well.

It drove people to steal, be obsessed about its wonders and greed, passion and revenge and even murder others because of this.

This book is no ordinary thriller, it has a unique plot all in it's own. Dazzling. Sizzling with revenge and betrayal. Full of all-the-glitz and shimmers.

Mr. Browne has a nice way of bringing his readers into the world of diamond trading. Nice thriller, fills you up with suspense and would make you want to finish it right away.

The Take Over - Stephen Frey

OVERVIEW and SUMMARY of The Take Over by Stephen Frey

Category: Books

Genre: Thriller

Author: Stephen W. Frey

One of the reasons I bought this book was because of what USA today has to say about "Take-Over"

"Grisham meets Ludlum on Wall Street.. a fast-paced roller coaster" - USA Today

You see, Ludlum's my personal fave and anyone who gets compared to him.. I would always try to read it.

This book is about a blue blooded secret power, a shadowy organization called "The Sevens". The Sevens were involved in a conspiracy so big that it can take down the current administration of the USA and places the US economy into chaos. They executed this "Pleiade Project" so well that when it happens the only one who can save the economy would be the Sevens and they would be called heroes and admired by everyone.

One man named Andrew Falcon was set up to be involved in one of the biggest take-over in history, all because of a personal vendetta of the most powerful among the Sevens. Falcon was so excited about the whole thing and gets into job without knowing he was set-up and would have no protection whatsoever after the takeover happens. But, then Falcon grew suspicious and stumbled into discovering "The Sevens".

This book is a great read. It gets better every page and it keeps you hanging on the edge whenever an action takes place. This book has different villains. Villains you would love to hate. You would love this book if you are into conspiracy theories, political intrigue, enormous wealth, wall street, murders and cold blooded killings.

Mentions Philippines in one part....

"The ceiling, at least twenty five feet high, was covered with exotic Philippine shells."

Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates - Mary Mapes Dodge

Category: Books

Genre: Children’s Classic

Author: Mary Mapes Dodge

Huzza Huzza!

A classic winter tale about a couple of youngsters on a Dutch village. Main characters are Hans and Gretel Brinker, who are as poor as they can be and can be seen in the canal with their poor wooden skates. The story tells about an upcoming race where two silver skates can be won. One for the girl who wins and one for the boy who would. The two, Hans and Gretel poor as they are can barely compete of the said competition against well-trained young friends who own costly steel skates.

This is fun read where the author tells you the history of Holland, the famous people and places of Holland, their culture and their stories.

You would also be taken away with the characters, the “little characters”. For most of the characters are young uns.

Nice fun read for children :)

Fear Street: Super Chiller - Goodnight Kiss - R.L. Stine

OVERVIEW and SUMMARY of Fear Street: Goodnight Kiss by R.L. Stine

Category: Books

Genre: Horror

Author: R.L. Stine

It’s about two vampires named Jessica and Gabri who are both thirsty for blood - nectar as they call it. The two of them are so arrogant that they decided to have a bet and the two of them are determined to win.

It’s my first time to read a “Super Chiller” and it is indeed a chiller because the ending is not the usual ordinary Fear Street Series where everything seems to be alright.

Another fast read.

Recommended for: Teens ages 13-16.

She was scared but at the same time she wants to end the whole thing.

Little did she know that she is about to discover a very horrid thing that the airline kept as a secret never meant to be revealed.

At the beginnning the book seems confusing, but as the story progress you would understand it. It is boring in the middle… but when it was about to end it’s where the action started. It has a twist at the last chapter. You would never suspect it.

The Eye 10 Infinity - 2005

Directed by: The Pang Brothers

Preceded by: The Eye, The Eye 2

OVERVIEW and SUMMARY of The Eye 10 Infinity

Though it has a number “10″ in it at the title.. it doesn’t mean that it has something to do with it’s chronology.

The ten there refers to the book entitled “The Ten Encounters”.

It’s a story about teenagers who visited their friend Chongkwai in Thailand. Originally those teenagers are from Hong Kong. While touring the place they passed by an accident and when they returned back to their friend’s home they decided to tell each other ghost stories. Chongkwai has a book ” the ten encounters ” which he bought and he will share a very funny story relating how he bought the book and theres also a text message about it being passed around here. The book details how to see dead people. The five were all curious about it and they wanna try all the 10 different methods.

I wont say more… since it would spoil the whole movie.

If you are looking for a “scream”, I tell you this is not the movie for you. This one is different from the other two “The Eye” movies and veryyyy funny, like when there are times when you’d think you would be scared and then a comic scene would interrupt.

Recommend: Watch with friends :)

One Missed Call 3 2006

Summary and Review of One Missed Call 3
Directed byTakashi Miike

Yasushi Akimoto (novel)

Minako Daira (screenplay)

Tagline: Death cannot be put on hold…

A class from Japan were on a graduation travel to Korea. One night most of the class were in a cabin telling horror stories and then one of them received a call. The girl who got it said it wasn’t her ringtone but it was her phone ringing so she picked it up. The voicemail message said “good-for-nothing” and it was her voice on the other line. Her friend checked her phone when she hanged up and they claimed she called herself.. and they said it was weird. She then received an MMS with a girl who was hanged.

The next day they went out to tour the city and the girl who got the first call was lost. She tried to phone someone and said “good-for-nothing” when she can’t make the call. She was shocked when she heard herself saying those words because that’s what she got last night. Go figure it out guys she was killed and ended up hanging.

After three deaths and those three all got the mysterious voicemessage and an sms that says “Death excemption by forwarding” and sometimes accompanied by a picture or a video… the whole class got freaked out. They freak when the phone rings which has one distinctive tone.

Typical Japanese horror film that would confuse you in the beginning and would leave you wondering in the end.

The Covenant - 2006

Directed by Renny Harlin

Writing credits (WGA) J.S. Cardone (written by)

Tagline: Four have the power. One will stop at nothing to possess it.

Story about four young (handsome casts) men who belong to a family of pagans with supernatural powers. Actually there are five families but it was believed that the 5th died. All the while they thought they were only four. But then, they are about to discover and “fight” the fifth person who wanted to take all of their powers.

It’s a good movie. Quite entertaining. There are scenes I really think and I think that are pretty much cool. The movie is “hanging” which would mean… there would be another part two.. right film makers? :)

4 stars for the handsome cast. Muwahahaha.

The Charm School - Nelson Demille

Summary and Review of Charm School by Nelson Demille

The author of General's Daughter brings you............

THE CHARM SCHOOL

Category: Books Genre: Suspense & Thriller Author: Nelson Demille

The story took place in Russia involving the KGB, CIA, Pentagon, and State Department. Gregory Fisher was the first person to appear in the story. He was travelling as a tourist in Russia alone. There were a lot of rules if you are travelling in Russia since Russia is against tourism specially if one gets to tour alone and not some tour group. Rules for a tourist involved never drive outside the city you are supposed to be in at night. Gregory was supposed to arrive in Moscow before dark from Smolensk and he got sidetracked while travelling at Borodino. He knew the history of the battle of Borodino, on his way he lost track of time and he was also lost at the same time. He arrived at a pine forest with a lot of warning signs ahead. He was pretty scared since it’s nightfall and he is supposed to arrive at Moscow before night. He met a man named Major Dodson who revealed a KGB secret that there are 300 Americans in the camp camouflaged by the pine forest held captive. Gregory gave him a map and some money while he was advised by Dodson to go to the American Embassy and look for a defense attache right away. Gregory finally found the place where he left off and hurried to Moscow. When he arrived in Moscow he was caught by a police with a reason “he was driving in the country at night”. He was accompanied by the police at his hotel The Rossiya. He tried to call the American Embassy looking for a defense attache and stated what he knew and that he believed he was in danger.

Lisa Rhodes got the call and transferred it to Sam Hollis an Air Force attache. He said he might be in danger and told the location of the Charm School and then he also told about Major Dodson. He told them that he is at The Rossiya and they must hurry because they are out to get him. That’s where it all started.

It’s very interesting and at the same time a thrilling story while it takes you to different places in Russia and giving a bit of history here and there. I like the sarcastic humor in the story. Very funny. It’s also a fast read… the words just flow out like a river unobstructed. It has more conversation which I like.

I don’t like the way the State Department, the White House, CIA and Pentagon ended the Charm School. Just inhumane. Better read to know why. All in all it’s a masterpiece. Love the story… the rich history of Russia and the gloomy past of Russia.

It also mentioned Philippines:

“A younger sister who married a jet jockey and is currently living in the Philippines. No children. ” - Sam Hollis
