Avatar - 2009

Category: Movie

Genre: Action / Adventure / Sci-Fi

Writers:
James Cameron

Director:
James Cameron

Producer:
Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, Dune Entertainment, Ingenious Film Partners

Tagline:
Enter the World

Cast:
Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanne Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso and more.

An overview and review of the movie Avatar written and directed by James Cameron.

When his brother was killed, Jake Sully, a paraplegic war veteran, took his place and was brought to another planet called Pandora. Pandora is inhabited by the Na'vi, a different race with their own language and culture. Their mission was to mine for the precious material scattered throughout Pandora's rich woodland. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.

It's one great movie and was even the first of it's kind. There was much controversy about the $400 M budget of the film but you have to say it was an artistic feat. And to say it was an artistic feat could probably be an understatement. The World in Avatar was done in great detail and you have to commend the detail and attention they placed into it.

I also enjoyed the message of the movie. Although, a lot of people in the box would think this is some "anti-church" since there was "nature worship" involved. Also, it might be a predictable storyline.

But, come on guys. We are evolving back to the olden ways. :) It was mystical... and enchanting. The land of the Na'vi's. It even made people get the "PAD" or post avatar depression. It did not depress me though.. it showed me a world the Earth can be.... if we respect it. :)

Neytiri: Our great mother Eywa does not take sides, Jake; only protects the balance of life.
Jake Sully: It was worth a shot.

Moat: It is decided. My daughter will teach you our ways. Learn well, "Jakesully", and we will see if your insanity can be cured.

Jake Sully: Well, if I'm like a child, then maybe you should teach me.
Neytiri: Sky People can not learn, you do not see.
Jake Sully: Then teach me how to see.
Neytiri: No one can teach you to see.

Avatar is one beautiful, revolutionary, innovative, extraordinary film that would leave you imagining the glow-in-the dark, nature-filled world. :)

Review and overview of The Other Boleyn Girl directed by Justin Chadwick and written by Peter Morgan based on the novel of Philippa Gregory.

Movie based on a historical novel by Philippa Gregory.

This is a European historical tale of intrigue, romance and betrayal. Two beautiful sisters, Anne and Mary Boleyn, driven by their family's blind ambition, compete for the love of the handsome and passionate King Henry VIII.

Nice cinematography coupled with poignant acting delivered by the actors and actresses. :) The movie left me and all of my cousins silent and low energy because of the dramatic ending, though....

Get Smart - 2008

Category: Movie

Genre: Action / Adventure / Comedy / Spies

Director: Peter Segal

Writer: Tom J. Astle, Matt J. Ember

Cast: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terrence Stamp, Terry Crews, David Koechner

Tagline: Saving The World. And Loving It.

Overview and Review of Get Smart directed by Peter Segal

Maxwell Smart(Steve Carell), works for a Government spy agency. He used to be fat and since he wanted so much to be a field agent and pass it's accreditation he worked hard on his body and was made lean and fit for the job. But, apparently the Chief does not want to lose him in the "desk" since he is so good at it and it disappointed him. But, when the agency's head office is attacked, the Chief decides to assign Maxwell as a spy and partners him with sexy Agent 99(Anne Hathaway), much to her chagrin.

Entertaining and Smart's acting and lines are really funny for me (although others might find it korny). Hehe. :)

Funny Lines:

Agent 99: Max has no experience, and I don't want him as my partner.
Maxwell Smart: Well, that is a sucker punch to the gonads.

Maxwell Smart: I think it's only fair to warn you, this facility is surrounded by a highly trained team of 130 Black Op Snipers.
Siegfried: I don't believe you.
Maxwell Smart: Would you believe two dozen Delta Force Commandos?
Siegfried: No.
Maxwell Smart: How about Chuck Norris with a BB gun?

Agent 23: It's not over Max, I'll take that briefcase.
Maxwell Smart: If you want it, you'll have to take it.
Agent 23: [pause] That's what I just said!
Maxwell Smart: I know, I'm just trying to annoy you!

Watchmen - 2009

Category: Movie

Genre: Action, Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Director: Zack Snyder

Writer: David Hayter, Alex Tse

Cast: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson

Tagline: This city is afraid of me. I've seen its true face.

Overview and review of Watchmen Directed by Zack Snyder

This movie was based on a graphic novel. I haven't read that one so I don't know about any alterations or whatsoever.

This movie is set on 1985, the glory days of costumed vigilantes have been brought to a close by a government crackdown, but after one of their masked colleague is brutally murdered, they were brought together. The reunited heroes set out to prevent their own destruction, but in doing so discover a deeper and far more diabolical plot.

It's a long movie and I find it gory but nevertheless I enjoyed the storyline. Great picture and special effects as well. Watchmen is something special though and deserves discussion and wonderful dialogue in between.

Quotes:

Rorschach: You see, Doctor, God didn't kill that little girl. Fate didn't butcher her and destiny didn't feed her to those dogs. If God saw what any of us did that night he didn't seem to mind. From then on I knew... God doesn't make the world this way. We do.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past - 2009

Category: Movie

Genre: Comedy / Fantasy / Romance / Chick Flick

Director: Mark Waters

Writer: Jon Lucas, John Moore

Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Michael Douglas, Emma Stone, Breckin Mayer, Lacey Chabert.

Tagline: You can't always run from your past

Overview and Review of the movie Ghosts of Girlfriends Past directed by Mark Waters.

Connor Mead, a successful notorious fashion photographer who is a player and has a bad boy reputation of loving beautiful women and dumping them when they fall in love with him, goes to his younger brother's(Paul) wedding, the only family he had alive, to convince him not to marry. He arrives at his dead uncle's estate during the rehearsal the night before the wedding; he starts in, taking his brother aside, trashing marriage and being cynical about it all.

His uncle, who taught Connor all he knows about women, appears later in the men's room with him and confesses that he realized he was wrong, and tells Connor that three ghosts will visit him that night: the ghosts of girlfriends past, present, and future. Can he learn anything from his life and fix what was broken?

This is a movie for all the players out there and for the women who cried over a player. *and I did not know.. I'd be one of them too! Shucks! RAWRRRR.* :) There was a part in this movie that I cried. And it's a nice thing after Ebenezer Scrooge. hehe.

Happily N'ever After 2 - 2009

Category: Movie / Cartoon

Genre: Animation / Fairy Tale

Director: Steven E. Gordon, Boyd Kirkland

Writer: Chris Denk

Tagline: Another Bite @ the Apple.

Review and Overview of Happily N`ever After 2 directed by Steven E. Gordon and Boyd Kirkland.

In the Fairytale Land, King Cole is married with his beloved Queen Grace, who is loved by everyone in the kingdom due to her altruism and goodness. When Queen Grace falls seriously ill and finally dies, the widower King Cole raises Snow White alone.

Meanwhile, Mambo and Munk tipped the scales of good and evil. The spoiled Snow White becomes a selfish and snobbish teenager for the disappointment of her father. She'd rather have fun with friends Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and Little Bo Peep than help peasants.

Snow White’s father is matched up with Lady Vain - a scheming witch brewing to rule the kingdom. Snow White becomes a thorn in Lady Vain’s side. She will do everything to keep Snow White away.

Now, I dont think i need to spoil what other characters might be there right?

At first, I wasn't all too thrilled but then later on I enjoyed the whole thing. I like the moral of the story and it was a good remake (although, of course nothing would always beat the original story). I had fun identifying the characters before the movie gets to tell their names. Hehe. Meaning I am really a fairy tale buff. Yay!

Some quotes I like:

"Just remember that a job gets harder of you only think about yourself."

"Just remember the mirror only tells you half the story, true beauty comes from helping others."

Doubt - 2008

Category: Movie

Genre: Drama / Mystery

Director: John Patrick Shanley

Writer: John Patrick Shanley

Cast: Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Viola Davis, Alice Drummond, Audrie J. Neenan, Susan Bloomaert

Tagline: There is no evidence. There are no witnesses. But for one, there is no doubt.

Overview and Review of Doubt directed by John Patrick Shanley

Set at a Catholic School in the Bronx in 1964. A charismatic priest, Father Flynn(Philip Seymour Hoffman), is trying to turn upside down the schools' strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Beauvier, the Principal. And then the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Miller. At the center of "Doubt" is the mystery of whether or not a priest (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) is guilty of taking advantage of an altar boy.

I like the acting... poignant. Its a gripping drama... And very touching. and would also make you want to doubt.

Father Brendan Flynn: Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty. When you are lost, you are not alone.

I ate there last August 2007 and it was for dinner.

This is a quaint little restaurant in Q.C. And it is not Little Quiapo for nothing. This place offers the best halo-halo and palabok in town.
Last April 18, 2008 we were invited by a good family friend of ours (my mom and I) to eat there.

She meets Kevin (James Marsden) a cynical writer who finds her attractive, and on the same week her younger sister Tess(Malin Akerman) re-enters her life and then falls in love with George.

Light and fun to watch. I just love watching wedding chick flicks. Hehe. :)

Funny quotes:

Kevin: [motions to a "Gone With the Wind"-style dress] What the hell is that?
Jane: Theme wedding.
Kevin: What was the theme? Humiliation?

Jane: You write the most beautiful things. Do you actually believe in love and marriage and just pretend to be a cynic or are you actually a cynic who knows how to spin romantic crap for girls like me?
Kevin: I didn't follow that at all, but I think the second one, the spinning crap one.

Jane: You're the one who's always telling me to stand up for myself.
Casey: Yeah, but that's not what you did. What you did was unleash twenty years of repressed feelings in one night. It was entertaining, don't get me wrong, but if it was the right thing to do, you'd feel better right now. Do you feel better right now?

In Manhattan, Liv and Emma have been best friends since their childhood. And their childhood dream is to get married in June at the Plaza Hotel. And the also love weddings and used to play pretend when young.

They both are proposed to by their boyfriends on the same day and they plan their wedding parties in Plaza Hotel, using the services of the famous Marion St. Claire. However, due to Marion's secretary's mistake, their weddings are scheduled for the same day. None of them agrees to change the date and they become enemies, trying to sabotage the wedding party of the rival.

Enjoyed the whole movie! I absolutely love the soundtracks!!!! :)

Nice lines I enjoyed: "Ipods are for lonely people who can't stand to be alone with themselves."

"I like your hair. You're really like this tall, hot Smurf." awwww. so sweet!

"It was quite a wedding and as I stood there watching I realized something I'd forgotten a long time ago. Sometimes in life there really are bonds formed that can never be broken. Sometimes you really can find that one person who will stand by you no matter what. Maybe you will find it in a spouse and celebrate it with your dream wedding. But there's also the chance that the one person you can count on for a lifetime, the one person who knows you sometimes better than you know yourself is the same person who's been standing beside you all along. Overview and Review of the movie Peaceful Warrior

This is based on a book "The Way of a Peaceful Warrior". It is about a young overachiever in gymnastics named Dan Millman who met a stranger at night in a gasoline station whom he named as "Socrates".

It is great for them to come up with this memorable movie of a lifetime. With great many aphorism and lessons to learn such as living in the moment, and more.

Very very inspiring. I could gush over this movie the whole day!! I actually watched it.. mhmmm around 10 times already? That's how great the movie is!

This is a no nonsense film... but a wonderful film that could inspire you to stay in the present moment! :)

Memorable Quotes:

Dan Millman: The journey is what brings us happiness not the destination

Mirrors - 2008

Category: Movie

Genre: Horror

Director: Alexandre Aja

Writer: Alexandre Aja

Tagline: There Is Evil........On The Other Side

Cast: Keifer Sutherland, Paula Patton, Cameron Boyce, Erica Gluck,

Overview and Review of the movie Mirrors.

I think this is a remake of a Korean horror film.

It is a story of an NYPD guy named Ben Carson that picks up a job as a night-watchman in what was left over the burned down Mayflower Department Store. Kinda eerie and weird.. but, hey it went A-OK. There were a lot of disturbing images and for the sensitive types you might not want to see any mirrors for a week.

I loved it cause it starred Keifer Sutherland. :P

If you want something creepy and something to weird you.. its good company.

Category: Books

Genre: Self-Help / Feminism / Spirituality

This is a review and summary of the book A Woman's Worth by Marianne Williamson

One of the female authors in the world of "self-help" that I adore is Marianne Williamson. Her books changed the way I view the world, love, life, and women. Her words really ring true and I admire the way she writes.... If only I could write like her. *swoons*

This book is a call to all the women of the world and the lovers of women. :) This honors all types of women and what we bring to the world in our own way. What we thought was weak is honored in this book. Absolutely one of the books i recommend women read. :)

The Bucket List - 2007

Category: Movies

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Director: Rob Reiner

Writer: Justin Zackham

Cast: Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean Hayes, Beverly Todd, Rob Morrow, Alfonso Freeman, Rowena King, and more..
Tagline: When he closed his eyes, his heart was opened
This is a review and summary of the movie The Bucket List

Corprate billionaire Edward Cole(Jack Nicholson) and working class mechanic Carter Chambers(Morgan Freeman) who have nothing in common except for their terminal illnesses. While sharing a hospital room together at Cole's hospital, they decide to leave the place and do all the things they have ever wanted to do before they die according to their bucket list. In the process, both of them heal each other, become unlikely friends, and ultimately find the joy in life. from ImDB.

This movie inspired me to create my own bucket list. Such a nice heartwarming story about living life in the present moment.

Lines I Love:

Carter Chambers: You measure yourself by the people who measure themselves by you.
Edward Cole: We live, we die, and the wheels on the bus go round and round.

Edward Cole: I envy people who have faith, I just can't get my head around it.
Carter Chambers: Maybe because your head's in the way.

Funny Lines

Thomas: What are you doing here?
Carter Chambers: Fighting for my life. You?

Edward Cole: [Carter's obsessing over a car] You gonna drive it or buy it a dress?
Carter Chambers: Just getting to know each other.

Edward Cole: I want my own room.
Thomas: You run hospitals, not health spas. Two beds to a room, no exceptions.
Lines that made me cry..... T_T

Carter Chambers
: Even now I cannot understand the measure of a life, but I can tell you this. I know that when he died, his eyes were closed and his heart was open. And I'm pretty sure he was happy with his final resting place, because he was buried on the mountain. And that was against the law.

Edward Cole: Good afternoon. My name is Edward Cole. I don't know what most people say at these occasions because in all honesty, I've tried to avoid them. The simplest thing is I loved him and I miss him. Carter and I saw the world together, which is amazing when you think that only three months ago we were complete strangers. I hope that it doesn't sound selfish of me, but the last months of his life were the best months of mine. He saved my life, and he knew it before I did. I'm deeply proud that this man found it worth his while to know me. In the end, I think it's safe to say that we brought some joy to one another's lives, so one day, when I go to some final resting place, if I happen to wake up next to a certain wall with a gate, I hope that Carter's there to vouch for me and show me the ropes on the other side.

Carter Chambers: [in his letter to Edward] Dear Edward, I've gone back and forth the last few days trying to decide whether or not I should even write this. In the end, I realized I would regret it if I didn't, so here it goes. I know the last time we saw each other, we weren't exactly hitting the sweetest notes-certain wasn't the way I wanted the trip to end. I suppose I'm responsible and for that, I'm sorry. But in all honestly, if I had the chance, I'd do it again. Virginia said I left a stranger and came back a husband; I owe that to you. There's no way I can repay you for all you've done for me, so rather than try, I'm just going to ask you to do something else for me-find the joy in your life. You once said you're not everyone. Well, that's true-you're certainly not everyone, but everyone is everyone. My pastor always says our lives are streams flowing into the same river towards whatever heaven lies in the mist beyond the falls. Find the joy in your life, Edward. My dear friend, close your eyes and let the waters take you home.

What Happens When The Numbers Run Out?

In the Year1959, as part of their school program, students were asked to draw pictures of life as they imagine it in 50 years and place it on a time capsule. Lucinda, an odd child writes a long string of numbers instead of drawing a picture.

In 2009, the capsule was opened; student Caleb Koestler gets Lucinda's "drawing" and his father John (Nicholas Cage), an astrophysicist and a widower, takes a look. He discovered that the dates of disasters over the past 50 years with the number who died was what the "drawing" predicted. Three dates remain, and all coming soon. He investigates, learns of Lucinda, and looks for her family. He also fears for his son, who is also starting to hear voices and who is visited by a silent stranger who shows him a vision of fire and destruction. What's going on?

Probably one of the 2012 possibility.. but it happened in 2009.

Author: Arthur Jeon

" Will I ever be happy in love?" "Why do I always fall in love with the wrong person?" "How can I stop sabotaging my relationships?" and "What's the secret to a passionate sex life?".

Found this book on sale at NBS. Though, I'm not really the type who would buy a book that screams "sex" in black.. but when I read the overview at the back and read the first few pages.. I told myself: "This is different". Indeed it is. It is very practical and modern. I love it!

This book personally helped me while I was going through things in my personal relationships. How to distinguish whether it's real or mere neurosis. from love the feeling to love the action.

Still reading it now and then....

Overview and Review of Max Payne Directed by John Moore.

I decided to watch this because it stars Mark Wahlberg. We were supposed to watch Mirrors but Mirrors wasn't on that time so... we got stuck with this as well.

3 years ago, NYPD detective Max Payne's wife, Michelle and baby were murdered. Max gets himself transferred to the cold case office, obsessed with searching for the killer who got away.

Mhmmm.. not that good of a film. though... enough said.

Genre: Dance / Drama

Director: Darren Grant

Casts: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Tessa Thompson, Riley Smith, John Reardon, Julissa Bermudez, Ashley Roberts, Karen Leblanc and more.

Overview and Review of the movie Make It Happen directed by Darren Grant.

Lauryn is this young woman from a small town in Indiana who moves to Chicago and left his brother to manage their auto shop with dreams of entering the Chicago School of Music and Dance. But after rejection and a series of unfortunate events, Lauryn then finds herself working in a burlesque club. The club proves to be a place of conflict and self-discovery, helping Lauryn to realize that even though plans may change, dreams never do.

It's a nice inspiring movie about dancing and pursuing one's dream.

I like this line in the movie: "Everybody who walks away from a dream has a reason and it's brave to give it another shot."
