Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon), an up and rising fashion designer in New York, has gotten almost everything she wished for ever since she was young. She has this great career and is engaged to New York City's most eligible bachelor.
But Melanie's past back in Alabama holds many secrets, including Jake, his redneck husband she married in high school, who refuses to divorce her. And since she is about to get married she decides to take a trip down south to settle matters straight, and make him sign the papers. But when things don't turn out the way she planned them out, she realizes that what she had before in the south was far more perfect than the life she had in new york city.
